Get your snag on; Classic Aussie sausage sandwiches

Sausage sandwiches, also known as “snag sangas,” are a classic Australian meal that is often cooked on a barbecue. These simple yet delicious sandwiches are made with grilled sausages that are nestled inside a soft slice of white bread, and are typically served with a variety of toppings such as onions, tomato sauce, and mustard.

Sausage sandwiches are a beloved and iconic part of Australian cuisine and can be found at a variety of events and gatherings, from backyard barbecues to charity fundraisers. They are particularly popular at sporting events and school fetes, where they are often sold by volunteers to raise money for various causes.

They are easy to make. Start by heating up your barbecue or grill to medium-high heat. Place the sausages on the grill and cook them until they are browned and cooked through, turning them occasionally to ensure even cooking. Once the sausages are cooked, place them on a white slice of bread and top them with your choice of toppings. Some popular options include caramelized onions, tomato sauce, mustard, and cheese.

This recipe adopts the same caramelised onions as in our steak sandwich recipe. If you donโ€™t have the time or the inclination for this, however, quickly frying the onions will also work.

INGREDIENTS

2 sausages

2 slices of white bread

1/2 yellow onion

Tomato sauce to taste

Salt and pepper to taste

2 teaspoons of ghee, butter or olive oil

INSTRUCTIONS

1. Prepare to caramelize the onions. If you are indoors you can heat one teaspoon of the ghee, butter or olive oil in a pan over medium heat and then add the chopped onions and mix them together with the fat. Stir every 10 minutes or so to stop the onions from burning. The process can take as long as an hour.

Alternatively, at a barbeque you can mix the fat and the onions in an aluminium packet and place it over the grill, leaving a hole at the top for any steam to come out. Stir it every 10 minutes to make sure it doesnโ€™t burn. Keep cooking until they are a golden colour and smell caramelised.

2. Barbeque the sausages using either a grill, or a pan. Heat one teaspoon of the fat with the sausages depending on your cooking style.

3. Place the sausages in a slice of white bread and top with the onions. Add tomato sauce, salt and pepper to taste, and enjoy!
